“A new UK study says that soy contains substances that help combat bone loss and can protect against osteoporosis in women over 50.

As women get older and go through menopause, they experience a drop in the level of the hormone estrogen which protects against bone loss. This can make them particularly susceptible to osteoporosis, a disease which leads to 9 million fractures annually worldwide.

A research team from the University of Hull in the UK has concluded that a diet rich in soy protein and isoflavones (plant substances which act in a similar way in the body to estrogen) provides protection from bone weakening during menopause.”

MIGRATION OF SHEEP AND CAMELS

I summer , caravan of camels and flocks of sheep can be seen moving along the road in Rajashan , while we were there , towards greener pastures. In the night , they pitch their tents and have simple food , consisting of chapathy and onion . They carry water in the bag made of camels’ stomach.

Old women and children sit on the back of the animal, in an open cage . They are employed by the owner of the rich man , living I the city . In olden days , the wealth was measured in terms of the camels , which are the vehicle of farmers, for carrying food grains etc. The carts are also drawn by camels. Camel’s milk is used as cows are not available . It must be taken immediately after it is drawn , otherwise , worm will be seen in the milk. I have not seen or understood these things.

Sheep get sheared every year at the end off winter and the hair is used for making threads which can be sold in the market .Warm cloths like sweater are knitted by ladies. My wife too made sweaters , though not as fast as Rajasthani women, who go on talking and knitting .

In my childhood , there were rickshas drawn by human beings in Trichur town. If you want a sexy night , get into a rickshaw and tell the man to take you to the ‘proper’ place ; they know all the places , from the cheapest (five rupees) onward. There were very costly ones too . The Malayalam movie ‘avalude ravukal(her nights) ‘ is based on this theme.

Prostitution is the earliest of vices. In the villages , people knew where to go .Their wives accepted it as normal . But in the cities , middlemen do the needful . They are contemptibly called the pimps .

What is a hotel? Well , a ‘ prostitute’s house serves the same way . If the women do it themselves , there nothing wrong. But if the pimps exploit women , it is a crime . There are international cartels engaged in pimping and governments are not doing anything to stop it. Minor girls are more in demand.

When we were staying in Deepa apartments, I used to go to the temple every morning . It was long ago and I could easily walk for miles. One day I met a man of my age . He was carrying three bags and I offered to take one . He began describing the woes of we elders:”I have to bring vegetables , milk from the dairy , teach the grandchildren, go to the bank and escort women to the temple . In some houses if old men are alone , they are attacked by robbers”

Today’s Mathrubhoomi carried a report about women prisoners in Viyur jail, Trichur.
Those who become pregnant, have no special doctors to attend them. At the time of delivery , other inmates help them. Bleeding is stopped , using rags of old cloths. If complications arise , some die.
There is a Vanitha Commission. They should take up this issue. Some of the prisoners may be under trials. In any case , all should get medical attention. In my view , they may be sent out on special parole, as soon as they become pregnant. All women prisoners may be allowed this facility of ‘open jail’. The laws may be amended.

There are male and female hormones in both sexes. It is because of these hormones that men get body hair and women develop breasts. These female hormones probably prevent baldness in women.

It is for researchers to examine this point.

It is a common observation that hairy men lose much hair , especially in the legs . Teeth and hair fall in old age. We become like children!

LIKE SOCIALISM, EQUALITY OF WOMEN IS A DREAM

Equality is a beautiful dream. All men are not of the same make, like a manufactured product. Some have initiative, urge to explore opportunities, leadership qualities, will to conquer etc. which mark them, different from the rest of the population.
So far as women are concerned, the very idea of equality with men is ludicrous. Their body structure itself is different. Men and women have to perform complementary functions. Equality smacks of competition. Is there any point in women joining the Army?
Can men become sex workers?
The institution of marriage is beset with the competitive spirit between husband and wife. Live-in is much better, as the partners are free and so,` will easily adjust to the ways of each other.
Reservation of seats in legislative bodies, for ensuring equality, will result in merit being the casualty. As a matter of fact, any type of reservation will be inimical to natural sprouting of the intellect.
We have to change our mindset.

I feel that the vociferous women’s groups are doing more harm than any good for the smooth functioning of the man-woman relationship

Pigs, goats, etc. have more than one baby in the same birth. Many women have twins.
However, elephants are not known to do it One reason may be that the baby has to have a large quantity of milk for its elephantine growth.
So when Alka of the Orang National Park in Assam gave birth to two female babies on 16-12-2010, it created history. The mahaut (keeper of the elephant) kept vigil throughout the night, as tigers can eat the new born calves.
