HEALTH-BEWARE OF BACTERIA IN RAINY SEASON
During this season , bacteria multiply quickly and spread in the soil , water and air. All sorts of diseases trouble us , making this the worst in the year , except for Doctors (!)
In Keralam ,we boil the water with a piece of dry ginger, Chucku in Malayalam, which kill germs and make the water safe. This is called ‘chuckuvellam’ (literally ginger water) . I have found from experience that, if you add a small quantity of ‘yavam’, it will help in clearing the throat of mucous mucus . This medicinal property of ‘yavam’ was advised by my uncle , who was admitted in Jubilee Mission Hospital , Trichur . Doctors were drawing mucous accumulation in the chest by syringe. They were surprised when they found great improvement. They did not know that he was drinking only yavam water.
YAVAM (Malayalam) grows among wheat and is known as Jo in Hindi .

Before going to Bombay in search of a job, I stayed with my uncle at Palace
no. 11,Tripunithura for some days.
He used to eat dosa made of wheat flour mixed with plenty of water and made into dosa, as he was diabetic. I would carry it and coffee from the kitchen to uncle’s room.
On the way the day’s newspaper was lying and , to pick it , I placed the dosa plate on the parapet. Acrow was watching me and it took off the dosa in its beak. I felt ashamed, but had to tell uncle about it . He only smiled.

Recent releases by WikiLeaks reminded me, of a book titled Vodka-Kola which I read long ago. Vodka is the common ale of Russia and Cola the favourite drink of Americans
The book contains all details about meetings held regularly between representatives of the United Sates and Russia, including the room number of the hotel, date etc., during the hottest days of cold war.
The two countries maintained very cordial relations, as Russia needed the wheat produced in the States and American businessmen wanted a market for it; and Russia gave the cost in gold.
It shows how cynical the politicians are, who hoodwink the gullible public, to maintain their hold.
The cold war hysteria suited the arms manufacturers, who made money. The people lost money as taxes.

Yet this work of fiction has taken on a life of its own. Over the years it has moved from being an example of Hovind’s corny sense of humor to a fully functional evolutionary model. The process of this change is so well documented I considered the title “The Evolution of a Lie”.

From circa 1999 [1],

I did some research on this, folks. I decided the more chromosomes you have, the more complex you must be because it is the most complex molecule in the universe; and so I arranged a bunch of animals and plants in order based upon the number of chromosomes they had.

I discovered that penicillin [sic] has two chromosomes. Fruit flies have eight. There are a few missing links in there three, four, five, six, seven. I don’t know where they went, but I do believe from this research that I could prove that penicillin [sic] slowly evolved into fruit flies. And then over billions of years, they got more chromosomes someplace and turned into either a housefly or a tomato. (They are twins, you know! Pretty tough to tell the difference.) They both have 12 chromosomes.

And then very slowly over billions of years we got more chromosomes and became a pea. [….] Very slowly over millions of years we got enough chromosomes to become a human. Here we are folks: we have forty-six. And if we can just get two more we are going to be a tobacco plant! […..]

Why don’t they teach the kids about the chromosome number as proof for evolution? I’ll tell you why: because it goes totally against the theory. You won’t find that mentioned anyplace! Those are facts, folks! Chromosome number does not prove evolution. That’s all a farce, of course. And evolution itself is a farce. [emphasis added]

Hovind has the audience taking in every word as gospel until the second last sentence.

In the slide show version of this presentation [2], Hovind listed the following reasons for DNA not to have occurred by evolutionary mechanisms;

* DNA is too complex to have arisen by chance
* Similarities in code prove a common designer
* The chromosome # does not follow the expected pattern [emphasis added ”

DEMOLISH FOOD CORPORATION OF INDIA

Food Corporation of India was established by the Government for procuring food grains at remunerative prices from the farmers and selling it to poor people at reasonable prices. This will check traders from making undue profits. The aim was faultless.

In practice, the FCI has proved a white elephant. The food prices are soaring. It blocks huge quantities of grains which otherwise would have come to market through private channels. The bureaucracy which controls it, is inefficient and corrupt.

NDTV has reported that thousands of tonnes of wheat, procured by FCI in  Punjab have been eaten away by rodents on the rest spoilt and rendered unfit to eat, because the grains are stored in the open.

Food grains lost every year this way, throughout India, is unimaginably high.

When loss making Public State Undertakings are being privatised, we shoud review the working of FCI.

In my view, we should bury this elephant.

IS CARBON DI OXIDE THE VILLAIN?

 

Such terms as carbon credit find a place in newspapers almost daily. I don’t know what is all this about. To me CO2 sustains life on earth. Has the level of CO2 in the atmosphere gone up? Has it been proved experimentally?

 Before Industrialization

The whole of America and most of the old world were inhabited by a comparatively small population, a majority of whom depended upon meat and fish. Farming depended entirely on rain water as big dams were unknown. The grasslands of America and Australia didn’t produce food grains. Coal and other fossil fuels were not commercially exploited. In those days we may presume that a proper balance existed between CO2 and other ingredients of the air like N2 and O2 in spite of forest fires, the like of which we witnessed in California recently.

 

After Industrialization

Commercial exploitation of coal began first followed by oil and natural gas, resulting in increase in the level of CO2 in the atmosphere. Simultaneously two other developments followed: increase in population (both human and animal) and corresponding growth in food grains production. Big dams were constructed and more and more areas of land were brought under cultivation. Mechanization and the use of artificial fertilizers made leaps and bounds in production of food grains, fruits and other commercial crops. The Prairies of North America became the granary of the world. Compared to grass, food grains and sugar fix a large quantity of CO2. The major items responsible for such CO2 fixation are:

 

  1. food grains like wheat, corn, rice, oats, soybean etc
  2. underground vegetables like potato, tapioca, beetroot etc
  3. fruits like apple, grapes, banana, dates, cherry, pineapple etc
  4. sugarcane etc

 

Experts can calculate the total quantity of CO2 produced by industry and that absorbed by vegetation as mentioned above and the marine vegetation in order to find out whether the net balance is favoring CO2 concentration in the air. An easier way would be to experimentally ascertain the percentage of CO2 in the atmospheric air (being heavier than air CO2 is available near the surface of the earth). If CO2 level increases O2 level should decrease. In my childhood (I am 70+) O2 level was 20% as mentioned in my text book. Has it changed? An atom of carbon combines with two atoms of oxygen to form CO2 which is absorbed by the leaves of the plant to form starch. In the process two atoms of oxygen are released into the atmosphere. We may say that each carbon atom burnt ultimately results in the release of two atoms of oxygen, thus resulting in increase in the level of O2. Level of CO2 dissolved in the ocean water should also be checked. If this level increases, fishes would die en mass. Has this happened? If the level of CO2 dissolved in ocean waters decreases, plant life in the ocean cannot produce enough starch by photosynthesis. This will be a hazard for fishes and other marine life.

 

The volume of animal and hence plant life in the oceans is much more than that on the continents. This is because the area of the oceans is seven times the area of the continents. Also, the oceans are deep. Hence the volume of water is very much more and can contain a large population of marine life. The necessary starch has to come from plant life. So, the total bio mass in the oceans is considerably higher than that in the continent. The carbon di oxideàPlant starchàAnimalsàCarbon di oxide cycle is there in the watery medium, just as in our atmosphere. All the gases, including nitrogen, will be present in dissolved state in the oceans too. Here industrialization has not affected the ‘atmosphere’ of the ocean. This fact has to be recognized in any discussion on Global Warming.

This would suggest that the percentage of oxygen has slightly increased. If this is true it augers ill, as forest fires may become uncontrollable with increase in the level of oxygen in the coming years. Therefore, this line should be investigated separately by experts. My guess is that with unchecked use of nitrogenous fertilizers, the total bio mass in the earth could have increased. The requisite extra nitrogen must have been drawn from the atmosphere along with CO2 releasing extra oxygen into the atmosphere as pointed out above.]

 

The importance of proper scientific study cannot be over emphasized. Mother Nature maintains her balance, whatever her children may do!
